Common Myths
There are many misconceptions about hypnotherapy, often fueled by movies, stage hypnosis,
and misinformation.
1. You Lose Control Under Hypnosis
Truth: Hypnosis is a state of deep focus and relaxation, but you remain in control the entire time. You won’t do anything against your will.
2. Hypnosis Can Make You Reveal Your Deepest Secrets
Truth: You won’t spill secrets unless you choose to. Hypnosis doesn’t make you lose free will or control over what you say.
3. Only Weak-Minded People Can Be Hypnotized
Truth: Hypnosis works better for individuals who are open to it and can focus well. Intelligence and creativity can actually enhance the experience.
4. You Can Get Stuck in Hypnosis
Truth: No one stays "trapped" in hypnosis. If left alone, you’d naturally come out of it on your own, similar to waking up from a nap.
5. Hypnosis Is Sleep
Truth: Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation, but your mind remains highly aware and focused. It’s different from sleep.
6. Hypnotherapy Works Instantly Like in Movies
Truth: While some people notice immediate benefits, lasting change often requires multiple sessions and reinforcement.
7. Hypnosis Is Just for Entertainment
Truth: While stage hypnosis is for show, clinical hypnotherapy is a legitimate therapeutic tool used for anxiety, pain management, trauma, and behavior change.
8. Hypnosis Is Dangerous or Evil
Truth: Hypnotherapy is a safe, evidence-based practice used by trained professionals. It’s not mind control, magic, or tied to any supernatural forces.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis to help individuals make positive changes in their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and physical well-being. It involves guiding a person into a deeply relaxed, focused state of mind known as a trance, where they are more open to suggestions and can access their subconscious mind.
During hypnotherapy, a trained therapist uses verbal cues and relaxation techniques to help the individual reach this state of heightened concentration. In this trance-like state, the person may be more receptive to suggestions that can help them overcome various issues, such as stress, anxiety, phobias, pain management, or habits like smoking or overeating.
Why use Hypnotherapy?
Here are some common uses of hypnotherapy:
1. Stress and Anxiety Reduction:
Hypnotherapy can help individuals relax and manage symptoms of stress and anxiety by changing thought patterns and promoting a sense of calm and control.
2. Overcoming Phobias and Fears:
It can be effective in addressing irrational fears, such as fear of flying, spiders, or social situations, by reframing how the individual perceives the trigger of their fear.
3. Breaking Habits and Addictions:
People often use hypnotherapy to quit smoking, reduce alcohol consumption, or manage unhealthy eating habits by changing subconscious patterns of behavior.
4. Pain Management:
Hypnosis has been used as a complementary treatment for chronic pain, such as in conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, or migraines, helping people manage and cope with discomfort.
5. Improving Sleep:
Hypnotherapy can help treat insomnia and other sleep disorders by promoting relaxation and altering thought patterns that disrupt sleep.
6. Enhancing Performance:
It is sometimes used to improve performance in areas like sports, public speaking, or academics by boosting confidence and focus.
How does Hypnotherapy Work?
Induction: The therapist helps the person enter a relaxed, focused state through guided breathing, visualization, or other relaxation techniques.
Deepening: Once the person is relaxed, the therapist may deepen the trance to achieve a state of heightened suggestibility.
Therapeutic Suggestions: The therapist introduces positive suggestions or imagery tailored to the person’s goals (e.g., "You feel confident and calm in social situations").
Awakening: After the therapeutic session, the therapist gently brings the person back to full awareness, often feeling calm and refreshed.
Why do we provide Hypnotherapy?
While we know hypnotherapy is not a magic cure, we believe it can be a powerful tool when used alongside other therapeutic approaches. We have experienced the personal development and healing that it can provide. At Realign, our skillfully trained clinicians use this tool to help individuals access their subconscious to address various psychological and behavioral challenges. Nicole Holler-Blackmon and Jenine Stallings were clinically trained in Heart Centered Hypnotherapy at the Wellness Institute founded by David Hartman and Diane Zimberoff. Nicole and Jenine obtained certifications in hypnotherapy and age regression through training with Jennifer Morris and Francesa Richardson. They later completed an advanced internship program, earning their advanced clinical hypnotherapy certification under the guidance of Judi Vitale and Lori Austein.
